By participating in the process to get the kayaks back to the rightful owners, you are doing a good thing. Your actions aid in crime prevention. If you get a few good deals afterward, then consider that a good reward for deterring criminals. If my kayak was ever stolen, I'd go apeshit wild trying to locate it. That said, it's so distinctive that any would-be theif would have to do a lot of work to make it look different.
I have often considered setting some form of ID into epoxy on the underside of the deck of the VJ (my kayak) to aid in identifying it if stolen. I think this story provides enough impetus for me to get on that this winter.
Thanks for sharing this story. You did a good thing by reporting it. I hope you get a good deal somewhere else to make up for all the hassles you have to endure form this point on.
