George, I think you are correct. Open or shut, who cares? But there are times when as I said before that after a severe pummeling in surf I open my eyes to see where the hell the light is. I've never had a problem, and I know of no cases of eye damage in kayaking or board surfing due to open eyes. Has anyone else? I would not however suggest that keeping them shut is poor form, as Jed and others have prooven it isn't. What I see happening to some folks in the surf is the "getting stuck half way over syndrome", and fighting it rather than peeking around for the light, setting up on that side and rolling. So I tell people to actively look in these cases and they seem to do better. The surf is such a great place to develop skill and personal preferences.
