: Epic paddles has a good, even handed description of the advantages and
: disadvantages of wing paddles: http://www.epicpaddles.com/wing.htmIN the olympic sprint events they do the 500 meters in one minute 38 seconds or 15mph. I have a 21 ft graphite race boat so of course i use a wing. There is a former world champion who lives 50 miles from me so he watched me paddle and then fitted one for me. They have different width blades- youth, man and superman width. I heard the difference between man and superman width is 45# of force vs 75# of force to make a stroke. I am an old bench presser who weighs 230 so I go with the largest blade with a slower stroke rate. Blades are interchangeable with hot glue. They are the most efficent for the forward stroke because they are so round to grip lots of water. I used wing with a 19 ft seda glider in 4ft swells and white caps. I bought a used wing paddle that won the canadian nationals for $120. Sprint clubs could help advise on lenght, etc. LIghter people often prefer mid width blade at higher stroke rate. Epic blades are super light and expensive- maybe not the best choice if you paddle near rocks. I like the turbo blades because they might be more durable and are cheaper and are made locally by Peter Patassi of smith falls ont. 613 283 8469. He has a web site but i do not know what it is. Wing blades improve your stroke especially with a narrow boat.
