I have a 1992 gmc full size van. I've taken it all over with 3 seakayaks on the roof. the wind is an issue but not big enough to warrent not getting a van. Vans are a great way to travel. Lots of room for stuff and ready made changing room. I have a yakama rack set up with the longest cross bars available. This allows for 3 sets of hully rollers. Some type of roller system is a must becuase of the hieght of the van( am only 5'6"). I carry a step ladder to help with the tie downs. i glued some foam pads at the back end of the roof just under the rollers. this way i can rest the bow on the pads when loading by myself with out scraching the roof. I also have a small trailer which is great but can be a pain to park for those urban trips. Also get a van with roof top raingutters. The racks that fit into raingutter are strong but and be removed in a flash.
