Consider a wagon

I have a Station Wagon ( 91 Toyota Camry V6) and its very convenient for up to three yaks. My rack is a Thule with the adjustable windsurfer pads/tie down strap fittings and I can use the whole lenght of the roof as a base. Its low enough that I just lift the yak from the side. Loading/tiedown takes about three minutes and the wagon back hold all the gear. I wouldn't go to a van or SUV as they are a lot higher, and the SUV's have very poor racks to begin with, you just have to haul them off and start over.
I'm hoping for wagons to make a comeback once folks realize how expensive SUV's are to operate. I have about five years life left in the Toyota, 115,000 miles on original plugs and exhaust! Its got new brakes, battery and tires, and thats it.
Problem now is there are not many wagon choices available, the Volvo's are probably the best of the bunch, but very pricey. The Fords are a good value.
For kayaks, I would stay with a low roofline no matter what vehicle you have. Its a huge convenience that I appreciate with each trip.
