Are there ever a lot of issues zooming around on this thread. I feel for John, there are lots of us in the country who don't live near great instructors. I live in Alaska, we do have a couple of kayak schools. I have tried two so far with, to date, no luck on rolling. The match between myself and the instructors wasn't there. I'll get it one of these times though.
I would be very nervous trying a wet exit with a tight skirt with no spotter. This goes more so for the first time. Somewhere John you must be able to get someone to help?
I can see where the tube could help. I have been very close on a couple of trys but had to wet exit, if I could have kept trying the roll without having to exit, bail the boat etc. I might have made it.
I also agree, since my boat is loose fitting, that getting that fixed before trying to roll again is a must.
