Not to burst your bubble, but you're comparing apples and oranges.
: re: the controversy, you can breathe out of the hull with a tube, i dont see
: the disadvantage of this in any situation, on the contrary. clearing water
: out of your snorkle is a common procedure for snorkle divers.
First of all, you've just added as much as 2 feet of tubing to your snorkel, as you suggested in the design you proposed. That's a lot more water to expel than in a standard snorkel. For an 18 inch snorkel (which seems long to me) with a 1/3inch inner diameter (a little smaller than real life) that's 5 cubic inches of water...for a 30 inch tube with the same diameter it's 8.48 cubic inches of water, which is almost twice as much. Furthermore, snorkelers know when they're going under and are prepared to clear the tube, they don't have to do it from a position of not being able to see what they're doing or surprise.: re: for practice rolling, put tube in your mouth and mask on, practice
: breathing while upright, then roll over with a spotter. i would like to
: hear john's response to this, whether he thinks it helps him or not.
: likewise for anyone else who wants to try it. my feeling is that it
: eliminates the need for wet exits when practice rolling and actually adds
: a measure of confidence that quickens the learning process, but it is up
: for anyone to find out for themselves. i have used the tube in my
: whitewater boat for 10 years, but have never tried a sea kayak.
This I think would be the only realistic time to use one of these, but it will teach the person to rely on the tube, which is unrealistic in a real-world scenario. Most people don't paddle with a tube in their mouth on the off chance they're going to capsize. Conversely, if you are practicing rolls, you know when your going to capsize and can apropriately take a breath and hold it while you set up. Most folks can hold their breath for 20-30 seconds, which is more than enough time to set up, even if you don't know what you're doing. I don't see how the tube would give anyone the confidence to slow down any further than that.FrankP
