: Kris & Jerry,
: I have been around water all my life and I am the last person to panic
: usually but here are my concerns. My spray skirt is very tight. So tight
: that I weight trained during the winter to have enough strength to get the
: spray skirt on and off, and I left it on the kayak for a couple of months
: hoping to loosen it up some. I can tell by my videos that others put their
: spray shirts on with much less effort then I do. The other concern is the
: watertight compartment between my legs and the tightness of the kayak deck
: on my feet so it’s all pretty cramped. I’m not so worried about this last
: one. Once I prove to myself I can get the spray skirt off at the last
: minute of breath I will be OK. Yesterday I bought my goggles and snorkel
: and fitted it with a tube. Picture. The tube is very curled and I may try
: to heat and straighten it some. And it seems it would work better if I
: could put a somewhat sharp bend by the mouthpiece to make it fit better in
: my mouth. Does this retrofit look right? The pieces left over aren't used,
: right?
: JohnPlease excuse the bluntness.
First thing to do is forget about that fart rebreather thing, it is a major distraction to rolling. Then change out your sprayskirt to one that seals well but can be released easily. A good seal is one that allows you to push the skirt to the bottom of your kayak without it pulling off. You should also be able to remove it easily, think worst case scenerio, like a shoulder dislocation, which is not uncommon in kayaking. You should be able to get that skirt off with one hand. Practice wet exits before starting on the rolling. Good form in wet exits is to tuck forward, pull the grab loop toward the bow and upward, then with both thumbs in the cockpit slide your hands back past your hips to free the skirt and then push the kayak straight off of you like a stiff pair of pants. You should be able to quietly slip out with very little movement of the kayak. If the box is in the way of smooth exits then it may need to be modified.Again my apologies for the bluntness, but this serious stuff.
