In addition to wearing a PFD, you should dress appropriately for cold water immersion, since we've had a cool Spring. Also beware of security zones, as designated by the U. S. Coast Guard, or construction projects such as the area north of Pier 63, or the Harlem Piers. Tidal currents can be strong, especially at Hell Gate during this weekend's full moon. Consider their predicted cycles along with the weather forecast. I would even consider water quality after periods of heavy rain and the resulting, combined sewer overflows ("CSO's").
Atlantic Kayak Tours has good background info. on their website, and they give lessons. For clubs, you might look into the Downtown Boathouse, Gowanus Dredgers, Hoboken Cove Boathouse, Inwood Canoe Club, the Long Island City Boathouse, Red Hook Boaters, Sebago Canoe Club, or the Yonkers Paddling & Rowing Club. Subscribe to "NYCKayaker," a regional forum which is maintained by The Hudson River Watertrail Association.
If you have to go this weekend and don't have enough time for background reading, consider taking a lesson or two at New York Kayak Company or Manhattan Kayak Company.
Don't launch your new kayaks into the open NYC waterways without adequate preparation, in terms of gear and judgment.
