Getting off topic, Junk mail

It certainly is misleading. The "No thanks" looks like "OK, I'll not register
then". Whereas unticking all the boxes and saying "Submit" just gets messages
saying you must tick at least one. Even if it is possible to register
without opting in to this stuff, any company that tries this sort of
stuff really deserves not to be supported or welcomed in any way.

Nothing beats getting broadband and running things on your own server
where you have control and no-one imposes advertising on you. Next time
you upgrade your hardware, clean the disc on the old machine, install a
free OS and sit it in a corner acting as a server where you run your own
forum, can post your photos without fear of the URL disappearing or not
allowing external links, and so on.

Of course, it needs you to do a bit of work. All these free BBS systems,
photo-hosting, mailing list systems and the like rely on basic human laziness
to feed their business model. And lets face it, that's a pretty reliable
strategy - we'd all rather be out boat building or paddling than fiddling
about upgrading the latest security fix or clearing out the cruft from a
hard disc...
