I think you will need to "calcine" the limestone to get a reaction from it later. This process is to put finely ground limestone in a kiln and heat it to greater than 900 deg F for a while. I think this is the stuff in plaster, and if you have worked with plaster at all, you will probably remember the thermal reaction when the water was added.
