Yeh, she was like 12 per cent body fat and elderly, she damaged her knee on the first capsize....when she went over the second time, in 6 F. water, she instantly when hypothermic.....when I attempted a standard rescue her leg hurt too much to kick or move so I got her torso out on my hull and was facing a physical lift and rescue into her boat, at which point she would have been too cold to paddle and too hurt in the knee to continue, so in the absence of support we were facing a close tow.....and remember, I was one instructor with 10 students, no assistant, second day out paddling for all of them, with a harbor crossing in ferry traffic to contend with. So I had to consider the safety of the group also.
