Hi Shawn and All...
I have a dear friend that lives in Rome, Georgia and knows of this Teacher and one of the boys..
This trip was something this teacher did for several years... took several kids on a kayak trip, always hugged the coast and camped for a day and came back.
Most of the kids were inexperienced and possibly some of the 'Helpers'.
When the storm came up.. they gathered all the other boats together and rafted up with the powered boat. The chop was bad enough that they lost sight of the other boat.. but waited to see if they showed up.. time interval wasn't known when she wrote me... Two adults did take another Kayak out and tried to find the boys.. but they too got lost and had difficulty..
They had only cell phone for communication and eventually got ahold of somebody that called the Coast Guard ?, I believe.. who then went out and found the rafted boats... and later, the search boat.
The kids were dressed in shorts and tee shirts... and had PFDs.This is all she had heard through the school where these kids and teacher came from.
Don't know if this adds any useful info... But this is what's going around there in Rome. This teacher is supposedly an avid kayaker.. but that doesn't mean he used any and/or all precautions.. ??
