While you're correct that we don't have all the facts, what we do know indicates that the "leaders" of this trip were woefully incompetent and unprepared.
- Having lived on the Gulf coast as a kid, I can tell you that the weather is fickle and unpredictable. Thunder storms pop up in a heartbeat on a daily basis. There is NO excuse for people who live there not being prepared for such an eventuality. It happens all the time.
- Obviously, no one was watching to make sure that the group stayed together. Otherwise, these kids would not have gotten separated and if they did, the search would have started earlier.
- Nobody had a marine VHF radio! Are you kidding me??? Had there been even one in the group, they could have summoned help as soon as conditions got bad. There's no way for us to know if that would have saved the two lives that were lost, but at least it would have given them a fighting chance.
Three strikes and you're out! Sadly, it was two inocent kids that paid for the incompetence of their leadership with their lives.
