: article says the storm struck just after dark. Both articles say that the
: boys were in a canoe (and other group members were in kayaks) and that
: they did have life jackets on -- I wonder if anyone had immersion
: protection as well (water temp ~60ºF).

Guides that make sure all the group has an immersion gear, probably wouldn't have taken a canoe with a bunch of kayaks. Different skills of group members is already enough to make guide's work difficult. Having boats with so different characteristics makes it unnecessarily difficult, IMHO.
