Here's what's likely to happen next in the school bureaucracy. They're going to ban kayak trips. This is the standard response. No trips no boats no water --no risk. Except to the minds of the children who miss out on an opportunity. I've seen it happen. (Children cannot leagally ride bicycles in the city parks of Los Angeles.)
Here's what should happen. Some kayak organization, group of guides,-some group of responsible guides with a lot of experience, maybe in conjunction with the Coast Guard, maybe the National YMCA, should write up a list of standards for safe kayaking trips for children. Where to check the weather, what to take on the trip, how to plan for contingencies, what type of communications equipment should be brought. I knew a retired movie director who was a search and rescue volunteer in Los Angeles-it gave him an excuse to take his boat out that didn't require fishing, guests or beer. I'll bet guys like him would love the chance to tag along a group of kids in kayaks.
Then with a list of basic standards the Kayak industry could sponsor a brochure that could be mailed out to schools that would encourage safe kayaking instead allowing the inertia of the standard sedentary bureaucrat's fear response to short change our kids again.
I made a suggestion, so tell me where I need to go back it up with some sweat.
