Take a look also at the Pygmy boats. A couple of years ago an Osprey double came in second in the Yukon race. Of course a lot of the credit goes to the engines, a couple of real animals.
The wooden boats we discuss here are really just composite boats with wood cores, so the hulls can be reinforced and dings repaired. They also come in lighter than most boats, especially plastic ones, and you can build one without previous experience in 100 hours or less. The kit price, even with shipping, will be well within your limit. I raced a plastic sea kayak (an old Puffin, admittedly one of the heavier ones) a couple of times in 1-2 hour races and vowed never to push that much weight through the water again. The thought of doing the Yukon in a hurry in a plastic boat gives me the proverbial willies.
Fit is a matter of outfitting, not necessarily of boat design.
