: Brian...
: BoatUS has Vectran from 1/8"-1/2". The Yale Vectrus Single Braid
: 1/4" ($1.64 ft.) has got a breaking strength of 8,000 lbs. That is
: unbelievable. My carabiners break at 5,000 lbs. A better choice for
: boating would be Yale Crystalene where the 1/4" cord has a 5,000 lb
: break strength. This has a urethane coated core of Vectran and a braided
: polyester sheath. Very strong stuff but expensive at 1/4" @ $1.48 ft.: Yale Pulse spoolettes have about 50' of cord... Spectra Core with polyester
: braid. Good convenient length... 5/32" teal colored (which I use on
: my rudder) breaks at 1,400 lbs. The cost per spool is $18.49.: Another real strong one is Yale Aracom T which has a Technora core. This
: stuff is similar to Kevlar. The 1/4" cord breaks at 6,800 lbs. and
: costs $1.16 ft.: As a reference, 1/4" braided polyester breaks at 1,600 lbs and costs
: $.59 ft.Thanks for the info. Brianne. Vectran is interesting material and incredibly strong, but I have to think that it's serious overkill for deck line use. There doesn't seem to be any advantage to using line with a breaking strength of 5000-8000 pounds, when our decks and/or deck fittings will fail under a load of a few hundred pounds. That's why I use braided polyester; it's still probably at least four times as strong as the deck fittings on my boats. BTW, that braided polyester price seems awfully high. I just bought 100' of 1/4" black braided poly for $20 at a local kayak shop.
