The point was about using a handle on a bow painter: makes for an easy and secure hold and is much better than just wrapping the rope ("painter") around one's hand.
Apart from being useful if one has to get ashore without loosing the boat after a wet exit in shallow rocky lee conditions it also serves almost daily when landing onto rocky shores where one can climb ashore in one place and pull the boat up only some ways farther.
Funny how you seemed to miss the point altogether, and just commented the unimportant stuff.
: This is generally referred to as a "painter" line here. Some people
: carry one in addition to their deck rigging. Some boats (Mariner) use one
: as both a painter and deck rigging.
