In Response To: Question for the Day (Shawn Baker)

: The Aussies and Tasmanian paddlers are big on this stuff. I know folks like
: Peter Carter actually advocate a minimum of 7mm line for perimeter line so
: you can really get a hold of it.

There's certainly some credence to that, but I don't own any boats that will accept lines that fat.

: Spectra is polypro? Wow. I didn't know that. I always figured it was related
: to aramid or polyester.

No, it's polypropylene. It's very slippery stuff and won't hold knots worth beans by itself, which is why it's only used in the cores of cordage, combined with a nylon or polyester sheath. It's also very heat sensitive and will "creep" (cordage industry term for permanent stretch) if heated while under tension. This is interesting, since unless it's heated, it has very little stretch.

: My brother is getting into the drum-building hobby and has a source for
: 1/4" black kevlar-core. (they use it for tensioning drum heads)
: That's my perimeter line plan. It should work similarly to spectra.

More or less. The only downside to Kevlar is that it tends to fail where it works over an edge, due to the relatively poor crush resistance and a somewhat abrasive nature of the fiber. Vectran is even worse in this regard, but I haven't seen it used in cordage of the size we would use.

: What did you use for your spectra source? Yachting supply? Climbing supply?

Marine suppliers carry it. You can get climbing cord, too, but I suspect that it'll be more expensive.

: Question for the day: should you put perimeter lines past
: the cockpit? Would a catastrophic breaking of the boat at the cockpit then
: have those lines present an entanglement hazard? (Maybe this is too
: specific to develop a good debate).

I don't like lines beside the cockpit, as they get in the way of the spray skirt on a narrow boat..

: Did you reverse-engineer their grab loop for the side-release buckles? I
: think I'd remove the bungies entirely to get them out of the way.

How do they do their grab loops?
