Once I got past the no hipsnap part, and the idea of changing hand positions on the paddle while inverted, it was very easy.

You just have to remember that it's not a layback roll. I've found that if I start from a c-to-c position, lever the paddle toward the boat, and do what is essentially an abdominal crunch motion, it's effortless.
