: Spectra is polypro? Wow. I didn't know that. I always figured it was related
: to aramid or polyester.Yep... it's some variant of gel spun polypropylene created by Allied Signal. It is very slick stuff... requires learning some new knots as traditional knots don't work with it. Kevlar (Aramid fiber) is very tough on knots as it tends to cut itself... two very different synthetic fibers.
: My brother is getting into the drum-building hobby and has a source for
: 1/4" black kevlar-core. (they use it for tensioning drum heads)
: That's my perimeter line plan. It should work similarly to spectra. What
: did you use for your spectra source? Yachting supply? Climbing supply?Kevlar and Spectra are both super strong with Spectra being probably double the strength of Kevlar. Kevlar is maybe 5x the strength of a similarly sized piece of steel while Spectra is about 10x. They abrade differently. You might want to go and read the spec sheets from the manufacturers. I am using Yale Cordage Spectra for yachts. It comes in convenient spools and the price is fair. I do use some Spectra runners for different stuff. I get those from the climbing store. I always carry some static line, carabiners, pulleys, figure-8, prussik cords, and flat webbing for camp duties and possible rescue situations (Z-Drag and stuff like that).
: I think I'll just use knots in my line on either side of the deck fitting for
: redundancy. I think I can keep a single line tighter than multiple lines.Spectra can be challenging to work with. It is a devil to cut... it is almost as slippery as Teflon, and it is hard to knot... which is why I use Spectra-core and not plain old Spectra fiber.
: Question for the day: should you put perimeter lines past
: the cockpit? Would a catastrophic breaking of the boat at the cockpit then
: have those lines present an entanglement hazard? (Maybe this is too
: specific to develop a good debate).I would.
: Did you reverse-engineer their grab loop for the side-release buckles? I
: think I'd remove the bungies entirely to get them out of the way.Actually... I don't have that. It is a great idea and I made a note of it in my head to do that the last time I was over at the Chicagoland Canoe Base ogling Seaward Kayaks... then in my old age, I forgot how they did it!
Safe Paddling!
