Question for the Day

: 100% correct. The bungees are not good perimeter lines at all. My boat has
: static perimeter lines that completely encircle the boat. This is the best
: way.The Aussies and Tasmanian paddlers are big on this stuff. I know folks like Peter Carter actually advocate a minimum of 7mm line for perimeter line so you can really get a hold of it.
: However, I have found two improvements that I am implementing for this
: season. First, I am replacing my current standard nylon lines with
: Spectra-core. I get a big time strength increase with Spectra core
: cordage. Spectra-core is made of a special extremely strong form of white
: polypropylene. It doesn't sag like nylon ropes do. That helps keep the
: lines taut.Spectra is polypro? Wow. I didn't know that. I always figured it was related to aramid or polyester.
My brother is getting into the drum-building hobby and has a source for 1/4" black kevlar-core. (they use it for tensioning drum heads) That's my perimeter line plan. It should work similarly to spectra. What did you use for your spectra source? Yachting supply? Climbing supply?
: Second, I plan to switch from one single length of rope doing a 360 around
: the boat to many individually secured sections. This will improve the
: overall redundancy and reliability of the rigging system and keep the
: lines more taut.I think I'll just use knots in my line on either side of the deck fitting for redundancy. I think I can keep a single line tighter than multiple lines.
Question for the day:
should you put perimeter lines past the cockpit? Would a catastrophic breaking of the boat at the cockpit then have those lines present an entanglement hazard? (Maybe this is too specific to develop a good debate).: Another rigging feature I have implemented is paddlefloat straps. Bungees are
: suicidally worthless for big people using a paddlefloat in rough water.
: Companies like Seaward Kayaks use flat webbing straps with Fastex buckles.
: I use this system over the top of and just inside of my rear deck bungees.
: I can use the bungees to increase tension on the float... but it is the
: straps that bear the entire load. They are bolted to the deck with 1/4'
: bolts and giant washers spreading the force load.Did you reverse-engineer their grab loop for the side-release buckles? I think I'd remove the bungies entirely to get them out of the way.
