Thanks to all of you for the comments,
I think I will keep looking to find a workable solution and keep the deck lines. It looks like there are several benefits aside from safety, one of them being a good place to park a paddle, I don't have a way on the front deck right now.
Now I'm trying to decide how best to secure the lines.
The quick and easy way would be to drill and screw in a couple of stainless eye bolts, maybe 1 every 2 ft along the boat backing them up with large washers and locknuts.
Another way would be to cut a slot and push through a loop of nylon webbing attached to a small wood block that gets glued to the underside of the deck.
I like the idea of the lines being good and tight. I don't want to worry about someone picking the boat up with one and ripping a fitting out.
Spreading the potential load out among multiple attachment points makes good sense.
Any suggestions? I know I don't have the patience to fabricate flush fittings.
