Hi Murray et al,
Murray, I'm saddened to hear about the death of your student. It sounds like he was fighting the good fight. I agree that sometimes it just seems that no matter what you do, when it's your time . . it's your time.
I'll avoid speculating of how things might have turned out differently out of respect for the deceased. I will offer just this one comment, we can either choose to live life (accepting the inherent risk of what we do) or we can dedicate ourselves to avoiding injury and death. Safety practices will protect us from only the most obvious of hazards, in the final analysis we are much less in control than some would care to believe.

: My info is third hand, so take it accordingly. But I understand that he did
: check for depth, and had completed at least one roll prior. So perhaps he
: drifted a bit between rolls and just assumed he had depth for another. Or
: perhaps he hit something man made in the harbour? It's just ironic, as
: this guy literally died in the pursuit of being a safe kayaker. Safe
: paddling ya'll.: On the safety issue, I think it's important to be safe, use good practices,
: equipment etc., but even this can go too far. In years past as a climbing
: guide I saw folk who were so encumbered with safety gear, backups etc.,
: that they were hazardous and slow. So without taking away from the very
: smart helmet suggestion I just want to add that we can be so safety aware
: that we're immobilized. Sometimes we die even when we think we have
: everything covered.
