: Shawn, I wonder if it's because of how far back and deep those rudders are.
Considering the way a rudder turns a kayak, ie. by pushing just the stern to the side, vs. edging where the pivot point is in the middle, I have no trouble believing the previous two posts' conclusions about the difference in riding the waves with and without a rudder.
assuming of course a boat with enough rocker to allow graceful turns using nothing but sweep strokes and edging.
the rockered boat naturally benefiting greatly from a skeg, for the tricky long side wind crossings.
