I'm sure someone will throw this in, but in case no one does:
I paddle rudderless because I like the simplicity. However, it sometimes leads to minor incompatibility with a rudder-equipped companion on a long passage because you can't stop doing corrective strokes until the wind stops blowing. You've heard the saying, "if you do something right the first time you don't have to do it over again." That doesn't apply to sweep strokes. It can get pretty relentless. You have to consider fatigue when you start a windy section.
On one stormy outing I was doing a great job dealing with the waves and wind, but once in a while I would miss the timing due to fatigue. I could just surf a moment on a rudder stroke and resume paddling forward on the next wave, but my ruddered friend got a misplaced sense of superiority because he could just tromp on the pedals. His well-meaning Saint Bernard presence was actually a nuisance because I needed some elbow room to take a breather on that rudder stroke.
This isn't very concise, but it boils down to this: One good sweep stroke deserves another, and another, and another,... But keep on without the rudder if you can. We don't need no stinkin' rudder!
