No, you have good points. All the text for Kevlar always says its the stuff bullet proof vests are made of. In 15 years of kayaking I have seen Kevlar take and react to all the pushes out there...it gets wounds just like fiberglass...I've seen fiberglass do better in some cases. Poly boats are durable, but they have their own problems: hard to repair, scuff easily so you have to actually shave them, they can deform under pressure in the heat of sun, and are less sleek than counterpart designs in glass.
: Hi Tim,
: I found this comment interesting. In my experience kevlar is used to save
: weight only and this is done by making the hull and deck thinner. Because
: of this a kevlar and fiberglass boat have roughly the same strength.: As for durability, a plastic boat will stand up to the rigors of hard
: landings on rocky shores and to being bragged over all types of terrain
: far better than glass or kevlar.: I would be interested to know how your experience differs from mine in this
: department because I have always told people if they wanted a boat that
: could take some abuse they should get a plastic one. Maybe I have been
: steering them wrong all along.: Thanks in advance,
: Ian
