Hi
When I bought my first kayak I was in the same predicament you find yourself in. I could not travel to test the boats and knew very little about them. What I did was this:
I read everything I could find on various boats that fit my needs and narrowed the choice down to a couple of boats made by reputable companies. I then picked a boat based on things that had nothing to do with their performance. (To a beginner kayaker everything is new and the performance characteristics are close enough in these boats that a beginner can adapt to them easily) I chose a boat based on the fact that 2 reviews stated that the test boat, which was a factory second, was by far the best quality of workmanship in the group. The company was also a local company.
It turns out that the boat I picked was perfect for me. This is not because I picked the right boat however, it is because I picked a good quality boat and learned to kayak in it. I believe that I could have picked any one of the other boats and I would have found them just as good.
