: I have not gotten to the point where "home" position for my hands
: is right at the base of the blade. You are just limited on how far you can slide. However, you don't need to slide as much.Did I say so? Neither have I, some 3-4 inches of dry shaft remain on both sides at "home" grip. That has given me enough control with the blades in question.
: Because the wide short blade can generally provide more power, you don't need
: to slide as much. You can get a powerful steering stroke without extending
: the paddle. And with the center of effort nearer the end you don't need to
: extend the paddle as much to get a proportional increase in power.Exactly. And I'd add this; with a short shaft one can more easily go up in cadence when required, increasing power/time i.e. effect.
: Is it really an advantage that you can grab the paddle any where if it is a
: characteristic of the paddle that creates the need to move grip in the
: first place? Wouldn't it be better to be able to get the effect you want
: without moving your hands at all? These are nice, tricky questions, Nick! But let's say: yes, it is - in a storm that is, when you don't want those wide assymmetric blades, for obvious reasons. Then you might as well go the whole hog and get narrow enough blades, right? Second question: yes it would ! I'd always like to have my cake and eat it too - sadly it seldom has happened quite that way.
But I had kind of hoped you would respond to the last part of my post. Why didn't you ?
greetings, risto
