: I'm not sure if I see the disagreement, but as I paddle a boat with no rudder
: or skeg, and one that is easy to turn, I've been accustomed to sliding my
: hands left and right on the loom all the time. And since my paddles have
: over the years been getting ever shorter, I can fully appreciate the
: benefits of having blades one can grab at any point.I have not gotten to the point where "home" position for my hands is right at the base of the blade. This is what would be require to make it so you couldn't slide your hands from one side to the other on a euro paddle. Since there is room to slide, you can slide to get an extended paddle stroke. You are just limited on how far you can slide. However, you don't need to slide as much.
Because the wide short blade can generally provide more power, you don't need to slide as much. You can get a powerful steering stroke without extending the paddle. And with the center of effort nearer the end you don't need to extend the paddle as much to get a proportional increase in power.
Is it really an advantage that you can grab the paddle any where if it is a characteristic of the paddle that creates the need to move grip in the first place? Wouldn't it be better to be able to get the effect you want without moving your hands at all?
