: a myth.Tom,
I won't jump on the "drop the sarcasm" wagon even though I think the tone of your post was unwarranted. Nor will I engage your invitation back to the debate on the existence of a "Bombproof" roll. Lastly I will not refute your contention to have "shown the light" to some newbies regarding the benefits of such a device. I will however, offer the opinion that any device or technique is subject to failure under some, possibly extreme, combination of conditions. This potential for failure does not mean that the device of technique is neccessarily flawed but rather is limited as are all things man-made. When the sh*t hits the fan, you are welcome to use whatever you think appropriate. I will stick to my "as-of-yet never-failed-roll" and know with all certainty that any conditions that might lead to the failure of my non-mechanically enhanced roll would certainly be beyond the limits of any device designed to assist a roll.
You have my deepest sympathy, if you've not been able to develop your roll to such a state that devices like these are not required. But I make no appologies for the consistancy of my roll and I take great offence at the notion that other non-assisted rollers are somehow elitists because they (we?) prefer to rely of our skills over any such device.
You mention that you have had some measure of success teaching non-paddlers how to use this device. For that you have my congratulations and admiration. I have seem similar success teaching non-paddlers to hands-only roll in white water boats and even some low-volume seakayaks. Quite often these students translate their knew knowledge to paddle-assisted rolls without any further instructions. We both believe we are doing our best to serve our customers. I'm pretty sure each of us can continue to teach our differing views for decades to come before running out of willing students, it is a rather large continent.
Wishing you are your students the best of luck.
