: There is nothing wrong with adding a bracing component to your stroke if you
: need a little bit of bracing. You can have your paddle enter the water
: with the lower edge forward and exit the water with the upper edge
: forward. You might get one quick, slight "flutter" as the
: leading edges switch.
SNIPI agree with Nick that eventually your strokes blend until you cannot tell where one technique (forward stroke, brace, sweep, etc) flows seamlessly into another. Although I do not use a lower-edge forward blade ("backward" tilt) on the plant, I have started a stroke with a forward canted blade and then switched to the "backward" canted blade when a very strong sweep was needed. You can also achieve a bracing effect during a forward stroke by increasing your stroke rate or by using a more horizontal paddle angle.
Nick's reminder is a good one that should be emphasized. Most of the technique that has been discussed on my part is based on the assumption that the conditions do not warrant constant bracing or sweep strokes. I have often worked on my forward stroke technique when the water is as smooth as glass making it easy to see, hear and feel the results of my technique.
