There is nothing wrong with adding a bracing component to your stroke if you need a little bit of bracing. You can have your paddle enter the water with the lower edge forward and exit the water with the upper edge forward. You might get one quick, slight "flutter" as the leading edges switch.
Paddling should not be considered a group of individually discrete strokes. It is quite possible to start out with a high brace which merges into a bow rudder or duffeck that becomes a forward stroke which transitions into a sweeep before turning into a stern rudder and finally ending up as a low brace. The stroke will just meld together into one thing instead of being a series of seperate moves. With experience you probably won't even realize you did all that. You are just paddling.
Don't feel that you are doing any thing wrong by incorporating a brace into your stroke, just be aware of what you are doing. If you don't really need a brace, you don't need to do it. After a while it will become second nature, you will do what you need to do. You will automatically move your wrists and arms to provide support and power in the direction you need it. As you paddle, try adjusting the paddle angle to learn how it feels. There is a practical use for just about every angle.
: I am bass ackwards again. Ive been tilting the blade reverse to this, and
: leaning on it slightly in the power stroke as if it were a brace. The
: crook of my thumb/hand is closer to the top edge of the paddle, where
: yours ( and Maligiaq's ) crook is on the flat of the blade.
