Mike,
I have reposted a resized version of the forward tilt diagram below. This shows an example of the forward tilt as viewed from an observer off the paddler's right side. The dotted line represents an approximation of the actual travel of the blade, it does not plunge straight to the bottom in a steep dive as you might initially fear. If anything, the dotted line shown in the diagram is much too steep.
This technique does take practice to learn, but I found that it soon became "automatic". You will know when you have it right; I find the sensation to be quite remarkable and not at all like dragging a vertical blade backward.
