: FBC,

: Congratulations on the paddle. Now comes the tough part, waiting for the
: water to thaw so you can use it!

: I'm happy to hear that you tried a draw knife. I found that it didn't take me
: long to master one, and they are amazingly versatile. Not only can you
: split off huge chunks of wood or hog large chips but with practice and a
: skewed cut you can also peel off paper thin shavings.

Greg:

I'm checking the Charles River near home at least twice a day and listening to weather reports for the daily temp! I am really looking forward to bringing my paddle out and giving it a spin. I know it will not be the best, but I am looking forward to experimenting with it and then building #2.

I switched over to unfeather Euro last Spring on Dave's advice (wrist stress) and because I intended to eventually switch to greenland style. That allowed me to work sliding strokes (a bit) and paddle low (even lost a bit of skin to the deck once in a while). I hope that sets me up well for this next transition to Greenland style.

I'm especially Psyched about this Spring and summer when the water warms. I want to try the laid over resting positions with the paddle, and to push the envelope on bracing and all. I'm eager to learn how such a thin blade plays in bracing, rolling and hanging around near surface while awaiting a buddy. I hear tell it does, but somehow I won't believe it until I do it. Those big fat Euro blades feel so solid on water. On the other hand, I got to believe the West Greenland paddle works better than euro, since it was the one built with the first kayaks, and for generations after.

On how curling wood is fun, I'm not to the paper thin pulls yet! I know what you mean about the skewed cut. I found it made a difference with the spoke shave too.

I did dive the draw knife once. Took a good sized chunk out (impatience, is that one of the seven deadly sins?). Since I used the draw knife at the blank stage, the gouge disappeared (thankfully) as I beveled the blank with my spoke shave.

In one of your previous posts you mentioned keeping the tool edges sharp. OK if I quote you when my wife notices the new sharpening wheel in my shop? I really did notice which of my tools were less than sharp edged as I worked the blank.

Thanks for your help.
