I agree that these are useful tools. For a much finer cut than a Surform, you might like the Microplane replacement blades for the Surform. These are much sharper and more refined than a Surform but are similar in concept. I use their R2 Microplane (flat blade) tool for work on paddles and kayaks. Woodcraft carries them, otherwise their web page is listed below.
