: Thanks for the advice. I spent the last few days on and off making a paddle
: from a cedar 2X4. I can't wait to get it out on the water (most of which
: is frozen around here). One final sand, some Teak Oil and I'll be
: paddling! Not a bad first attempt. Once I paddle it I'll probably have a
: bunch of adjustments for the next one (already got a nice cedar board
: waiting).: I found that a hand saw and draw knife were all I needed for roughing out the
: blank. A spoke shave and knife did the rest up to sanding. Clamping caused
: some trouble because the cedar mars easily. I took to padding the clamps
: when I was drawing off wood.: I used Chuck's directions, which were great.
: A nice vacation spent making wood curls in my basement.
: FBC
I made a paddle from Chuck's directions in the fall from solid cedar, used it on three outings and then took it back to the workshop and put ash tips and protector edges on it and thinned it down some more,I also added a decorative birch inlay and artwork on the loom.I finally got out on Lake Ontario yesterday with a friend,it worked great. I really felt like an Eskimo paddling my store bought greenland boat and homemade paddle with ice chunks scraping off the hull all the time.lots of ducks and we arrived at our destination in time to witness 40 people go for a new years day swim in amongst the scrap ice, while we sat in our warm boats covered in neoprene and dry tops.Winter paddling is great.more people should try it.
Anyhow what I really wanted to say is one tool I found really useful for shaping
the paddle was a sureform, kind of a cross between a plane and a rasp.It made it easy to make the gradual contour changes(fairing) without gouging .When I was finished with that tool it left a reasonably smooth surface that demanded a minimum of sanding to finish it off.
Hope you find some open water soon.
