: I used to be a sailmaker in Southern California, lots of miles sailing at
: night, would and NEVER had ship change course in fog,or good conditions.
: Use your ears and change course.Max. Hard for ships to change course for sure! But ferries, yachts, guys like me driving water taxi's etc., could benefit by being able to see kayakers. In the San Juans for example kayakers routinely set off acrss Guemes Channel in the fog. I'll be running slowly on a GPS course, sounding every 2 min., and constantly checking the radar. I can't always see kayakers till I'm right on em. I am not going fast in fog, so I always have time to react. Had they had a reflector would I have known they were there? I don't know, as my experience with them is nill, but, when this happens I'm scared for my fellow paddlers, as a lesser aware boater may hit em. Now, would a reflector change the outcome with a poor boater? Probably not. What is very apparent however, is the lack of understanding among many paddlers of the increased vulnerability they have in fog.
