: I'm thinking about building a greenland paddle or two before Spring. Sites
: noted in posts earlier this year had great building plans for single piece
: paddles and the recent laminate posts were helpful too (not to mention
: Kent's increadibly beautiful picture).: My question is what tools does one need to make a greenland paddle. I will
: probably carve from a single cedar piece, but would love to know from the
: laminators what they need for tools also.: I'm on a budget, so stocking up on power bandsaws, etc. is not in the cards.
: I am competent (far from expert) with hand tools.: What's on your "need to have" and "nice to have" lists?
: Thanks in advance,

Thanks for the advice. I spent the last few days on and off making a paddle from a cedar 2X4. I can't wait to get it out on the water (most of which is frozen around here). One final sand, some Teak Oil and I'll be paddling! Not a bad first attempt. Once I paddle it I'll probably have a bunch of adjustments for the next one (already got a nice cedar board waiting).
I found that a hand saw and draw knife were all I needed for roughing out the blank. A spoke shave and knife did the rest up to sanding. Clamping caused some trouble because the cedar mars easily. I took to padding the clamps when I was drawing off wood.
I used Chuck's directions, which were great.
A nice vacation spent making wood curls in my basement.
