I mount my compass on the foredeck pretty close to the forward hatch. This gives me a pretty good view over my deck bag. And it location means that there's little interference from steel fasteners.

I use mine all the time. It's very hard to dead reckon without knowing your speed. But I usually guess my speed and come out reasonably close, but I also figure in how much the wind and current are pushing me over too.

As for taking a sighting off distant land marks I use an orientering compass for that. It's easier for me, and in my opinion and experience more accurate. However, that's just me.
