Do you think that not being aware of potential conditions is more of a factor than not dressing for immersion? Or practicing skills? It seems to me that most, if not all, of the people who were seriously injured or died, were directly related to attire. It seems a recurring theme; had they been LESS hypothermic, that rescue could have been succsessful, or had they practices wet reentry skills in the rough, etc... It's true that they got into conditions they didnt expect, but my point is that they werent prepared for immersion. All of the deaths are directly realted to this, and many of the close calls.
Also, I'm interested in hearing others's "short list" of recommended safety items that they normally DONT carry (but should!). Mine was a little longer than I like to admit.
: Hi Don, George is a very good friend and paddling partner. I also do some
: work for him occassionally. I guess your comments make me want to restate
: what I have several times. We kayakers spend time learning the skills of
: kayaking, but often do not learn the skills of being a mariner. So often
: folks really do not understand current, tide, fetch, navigation, set and
: drift, and the dreaded Rules. I think it's all important to being safe and
: a courteous mariner. Hopefully boards like this will spark some interest
: in folks to have fun learning skills that they may not have. We all keep
: learning eh? Cheers MH
