Happy holiday all. You are right that rough conditions make it harder, but in rough conditions we paddle in a stagger formation so a couple of paddle strokes puts you by the next boat. It is not academic, we go out and practice it. You can get close enough to the next boat to slap a paddle across it and have a good brace while the other boater uses the paddle shaft to get back up.
You may miss it, but what is the advantage of bailing out without even trying?
The other thing I don't understand...regardless of how you are dressed (rain gear, wet suit, dry suit, short and T-shirt), why would you stay in the water when you can have your head and torso up on the boat in seconds while you effect the rest of your rescue?
Every moment of time in the water is sucking body heat at some rate. Even after you are back in the boat, you have things to do to get back to a safe paddling condition/situation. The more body heat you have lost the more the chance of screwing up.
We've had two kayakers die up here because they hung onto their boat but didn't get back onto it. On it they would have lasted long enough to have been spotted and rescued in the area they were boating.
