Mount Up

: Matt,
I've seen people without a recess in their deck mount compasses on their forward hatch cover. There is gear specifically for this purpose.
Dead reckoning in a fog, you will be eyeing the compass often. If it is mounted close in to the cockpit, some folks are prone to getting seasick. Any repeated movement of the head to look down in rough water can do this.
Agree with the comment about not cluttering your deck. A seaworthy craft will shed a beam sea breaking over it fairly quickly and with a minimum of heeling moment. Deck junk gives traversing waves something to grab on to to push you over (not to mention raising the center of gravity). Having said that, a lone compass will always be spared, when I'm clearing my decks for action. It's a must, in my view, for off shore kayaking. In a thick fog I prefer it to my GPS for moment to moment orientation.Carl
