compasses

I have a Ritchie compass, which I'm sure cost a pretty penny. It's about 4 or 5 inches in diameter. The problem is that the only place to mount it is way forward and it's sometimes hidden by the junk on my foredeck.
I would think it would be a better solution to have a smaller one mounted closer to me. I've heard of compasses mounted on the spray skirt itself. I think I could get just as accurate with an automobile compass from walmart, mounted right in front of the cockpit. I'd love a recessed one, but alas, it's not an option in my plastic boat.
So I'd love to hear stories about people's compasses, where they mount them, and if they ever used them for dead reckoning in the fog etc. One advantage of a bigger one mounted forward, is being able to keep it in view while sighting distant landmarks?
