Hi,
I'll try to explain how I do my paddles. My list of tools is pretty small. I start by cutting the loom from a 1" x 4" on the table saw. I make the loom 2 feet longer than I want it. The blank is hollowed out with a router and a 1" round nose bit on a router table. I make the router cut the same as the loom length and leave 1 foot on each end solid. I then glue up the loom so it's a 1-1/2" square blank. I then use a home made taper jig to cut the points on the loom. For the blades, after I laminate two halves from 5/4 stock to the length I want. I cut a taper to match the loom with a block plane. I then glue the two halves to each end of the loom. Once the whole paddle blank is glued up I taper the edges of the blade to the shape I want the paddle with a block plane. I then steam bend ash around the blade and glue it up once the ash cools. Now that the gluing process is complete I start carving. The rest of the work is done with a block plane a spoke shave and a japanese saw file. Once the rough work is complete I sand the whole thing, slap some varnish on it and go paddling. All the deminsions I use are from Chuck Holsts web page.
