Hi Woody,

I am glad someone picked up on this. I qualified the statement with another one that said; you had better be sure that you can get back in the boat.

Many people (I was one) think that if they perform a self rescue in 5 minutes they only need to dress for 5 minutes of immersion when in fact this is assuming that everything goes well. What happens if it does not? What happens if I blow a self rescue or two and am now in the water for 7 minute?

They forget that they are going to lose much of their dexterity and thinking ability very quickly.

This is the reason that I recommend going to a beach in the middle of winter and actually TESTING your system. If I can swim around for 1/2 hour on a beach I am pretty sure that this will allow me ample time to execute a self rescue in MOST situations. (Boat blowing away may not be covered here!!)

To get back to my original statement, "you only need to dress for your immersion time", means that if you had better practice your rescues until they can be done in the time that you are dressed for. If you can not do a rescue in 5 minutes don't fool yourself and dress for 5 minutes in the water, give yourself a large safety margin.

Merry Christmas,

Ian
