Thanks! I already have the 4mm wetsiut, it's leftover from waterskiing. And Ive used it, it's OK thru the shoulders. The real debate here is to combine it with a drytop ($150-200) or hold out for a dry suit. I think I'll pick up the top, and see how far I can get with that combination. I suspect that I'm on the low end of cold tolerance these days; ever since I moved into a house heated by woodstove. The choices at home are 75-80 or cold, and we choose warm. You acclimate after awhile.
: Hi Don, I strongly recommend getting on the outfit you have decscribed so far
: and taking your kayak out to 4ft deep water and floating around in the
: water for 30 minutes THEN go through whatever rescue feels right. With
: someone there to cheer you on or drag you out. That really is a meaningful
: guideline. It will give you time to see where and how your insulation
: works in a very slow and controlled circumstance. People vary too much in
: their body fat, fitness and reaction to stress to put such an important
: issue to universal guidelines. Let alone whether the circumstances of a
: wet-exit involve more than 10 minutes at the beginning or end of a long
: paddle when your calorie reserves are highest or depleted. In my
: experience 45 degrees is definately a less than 15min. immersion with many
: redundant layers involving neoprene and FULL HEADGEAR. But that's based on
: my experience with lots of people around and warm tea nearby with a big
: breakfast earlier. So get the 4mm suit, but get in the water with it
: before assuming anything about the level of protection it affords for
: paddling.
