In Response To: Re: Call me chicken... (Ian Johnston)

While I generally agree with Ian's comments, I would point out that as well as being able to survive the time in the water we also have to survive the cooling mechanisms still working even after we are out of the water. Evaporation primarily is an issue as is convection if one is not wearing some kind of a dry-suit

: 1- being able to roll means cold water is of little threat.

True for those that have very reliable rolls, the cold water affects only those areas exposed to the water. If you are wearing a drytop, then life is good. If you are not wearing a drytop or drysuit, then . .well . . .??

: 2- you had better be able to re-enter your boat once you have wet exited.

Absolutely

: These in turn show that the best defence is good technique not high priced
: equipment.
: The three most important things needed to kayak safely are;
: PRACTICE,
: PRACTICE,
: PRACTICE.

LOL I love it !!
