: experiments. Sound like the answer to the question is no...You don't have to go to all the trouble of kayaking, you can just head to the beach and try out your equipment by walking into the water. Make a nice fire (if it's allowed) and you can warm up quite nicely afterward.
I agree with what others have said here about time in the water and dress. You only need to dress for the time it takes to re-enter your boat. This illustrates two important ideas;
1- being able to roll means cold water is of little threat.
2- you had better be able to re-enter your boat once you have wet exited.
These in turn show that the best defence is good technique not high priced equipment.
The three most important things needed to kayak safely are;
PRACTICE,
PRACTICE,
PRACTICE.
